Vulnerability Assessment vs. Penetration Testing: Key Differences

Understand the difference between vulnerability assessments and penetration tests, and why your organization needs both.

Two Approaches to Security Testing

Organizations often confuse vulnerability assessments with penetration testing. Both are valuable, but they serve different purposes and produce different outcomes.

Vulnerability Assessment

A vulnerability assessment scans and identifies known weaknesses in your systems — unpatched software, misconfigured services, and default credentials. It provides a broad view of your attack surface without actively exploiting findings.

Penetration Testing

A penetration test goes further. Our team actively attempts to exploit identified vulnerabilities to determine real-world risk. We chain weaknesses together to show the actual impact an attacker could achieve against your organization.

Which Do You Need?

Regular vulnerability assessments keep you aware of your exposure. Periodic penetration tests validate your defenses and meet compliance requirements. Together they form a robust external security testing program.
